Technology is funny. One day, it's hot, new, and exciting, and then 12 months later you feel like it's a piece of junk. For example, I can't believe I actually paid hundreds of dollars for this. Now that Apple is slashing the price of its new 3G iPhone while at the same time adding all sorts of new features, including a faster data network, should buyers of the iPhone I be having remorse? Maybe not. Read on.
Dan Jones, site editor of Unstrung, gives you iPhone I owners 10 good reasons to stop stressing out. The natural fear is that you feel as if you got taken to the cleaners on an expensive paperweight that's stuck in the molasses-slow EDGE network. After all, Apple is slashing the price to half that of the original iPhone -- released only a year ago -- while at the same time doubling the data rate. That's four times as cool, no?
Well, hold on. Jones has a nice list of rationalizations if you are stuck with the iPhone Antique and want to feel better about it.
Here's an example:
1. AT&T wants more money for data You've already paid up to $600 upfront for the original EDGE iPhone. The new $200 and $300 iPhones are subsidized by AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T - message board) over a two-year contract, but the operator will make some of its money back via increased data pricing. AT&T has increased its unlimited 3G data plan pricing to $30 a month from $20 for the original plan, which means $240 more for data over the entire 3G contract.
As a not-so-early adopter of the EDGE network iPhone (I got mine in October last year and paid $400), I have to say I'm seriously considering getting the newer version. I love the device itself, but the EDGE network is just sooooooooo slooooooow. I'm not thrilled about paying for the device a second time, but if it means twice the speed, it might be worth it.
