Contentinople announced two awards at our Contentonomics event last week -- one for the best online media presentation and one "People's Choice" award for best content delivery network (CDN).
Media Showcase Award: Matt Rutherford, Web Strategist with Charlie Rose Inc., won our Media Showcase with the best presentation of the week. Rutherford explained in detail how Charlie Rose would take its entire archives online and enable the community to help clip and manage the digital footage -- a pretty radical step.
Rutherford said that, because "copyright is anachronistic," Charlie Rose is willing to toss copyright concerns out the door and enable its users to tag and edit its footage online. The example he gave is the now-famous video of Charlie Rose interviewing Charlie Rose.
Better yet, Rutherford followed the instructions we handed out to presenters prior to the event: He explained how the site plans to make money.
Charlie Rose, which has digitized thousands of hours of footage, is in the process of tagging and applying detailed metadata to all of its video. It will organize the video into vertically focused buckets -- for example, there will be a business channel featuring interviews with leading business luminaries -- and it will charge high-CPM rates to reach these vertical audiences.
Rutherford said that, with the high-quality demographics of the Charlie Rose audience, he expects to have CPM rates in the range of $100 -- comparable to something along the lines of Bloomberg.
People's Choice CDN: EdgeCast Networks Inc. won our People's Choice CDN award, based on the results of voting in our online guide.
EdgeCast is currently tied with three other CDNs -- Velocix, Mirror Image, and Limelight Networks -- with a high rating of 3 1/2 Fezzes in our ranking system. But the self-described "only CDN based in Hollywood" also has 15 "saves" -- or bookmarks -- which gave EdgeCast the win for tiebreaking purposes.
EdgeCast President James Segil was on hand at Contentonomics to accept the award.
Contentinople plans to give out further awards in 2008 and 2009, based on the results of our Guide findings.
