It was inevitable, I suppose, but Brightcove has decided to wind its consumer-facing portal Brightcove.tv down. The site was launched earlier this year in order to allow the company to focus on its technology rather than its attempt to become a YouTube clone.
Consumer accounts are now being closed down and consumer uploads will
be cut off entirely on December 17, but Brightcove.tv will remain as a
guide to videos published by the company's commercial publishers.
"We've decided to get out of running a consumer video sharing site, but
this as always represented a relatively small percentage of the traffic
to Brightcove.tv," says Adam Berrey, marketing VP.
Speaking to Contentinople back in October, Berrey explained that splitting off into two sites was a natural progression where Brightcove.com
would exist to offer potential customers an idea of
what Brightcove had to offer and Brightcove.tv would allow for user-gen content and the like. Goodbye to all that.
With clients that include the Dow Jones, the Wall Street Journal, and Variety the company has always
known on which side its bread was buttered.
