Months after striking deals with online video rental sites CinemaNow and Jaman, TiVo Inc. (Nasdaq: TIVO) is finally making content from those companies available on its digital video recorders (DVRs).
Following up on a deal that was first announced way back in January, Jaman has opened up its library of mostly independent, foreign, and documentary films for rent on TiVo DVRs. Jaman will provide indie titles such as The Girl with a Pearl Earring, as well as Bollywood and anime favorites, with pricing starting at $1.99 per title.
As its deal was announced in May, CinemaNow has taken slightly less time to get onto TiVo DVRs. Beginning next week, CinemaNow will offer TiVo users new and classic films from Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS), including downloads of titles such as Dumbo and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. Pricing starts at $2.99 per rental.
The new content from Jaman and CinemaNow will be available on Series 2, Series 3, and TiVo HD DVRs.
By enabling new video-on-demand content, it seems TiVo is trying to differentiate its products from DVR-enabled set-top boxes that are available through regular cable and IPTV pay TV subscriptions.
The company also has a deal for digitally downloadable content from Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN)'s Amazon Unbox service. More recently, TiVo announced a distribution deal with YouTube that would make user-generated content available through its Series 3 or TiVo HD DVRs.
