Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN) isn't the only service provider offering content delivery services from the cloud. By partnering with Limelight Networks Inc. (Nasdaq: LLNW), Rackspace Managed Hosting will offer CDN services through its cloud hosting division Mosso .
Mosso, which is pronounced Moe-So, not Moss-O, launched its new Cloud Files service, to allow its customers to have easy-to-implement content distribution that is integrated with the company's cloud storage and application acceleration services.
"Cloud storage is really good for large media files," says Lew Moorman, Rackspace's chief strategy officer. "This allows a customer to put all their media files online, and very seamlessly put them into a CDN. They can do it without contract negotiations, and they can do it at a very reasonable price."
The pitch -- to make CDN "so easy marketing can do it" -- is a familiar one. So familiar, in fact, that Amazon launched its own no-hassle, cloud-based CDN service just yesterday.
But there are some key differences, Moorman says. For one thing, he says the partnership with Limelight should give Mosso's offering greater scale and reliability. "Amazon built its own CDN, while we partnered with a global, Tier 1 provider," Moorman says.
Also, Moorman says Amazon's CDN service is very developer-centric, while Mosso tries to be more API- and GUI-friendly. And finally, he says that Mosso will provide a level of support that Amazon won't match.
