Netflix Inc. (Nasdaq: NFLX) keeps expanding the reach of its Watch Instantly online video service into the living room, with the announcement today that its content will soon be available directly on Internet-connected HDTV sets from LG Electronics Inc. (London: LGLD; Korea: 6657.KS) .
Under the agreement, LG will make Netflix streaming available on new broadband-enabled plasma and LCD HDTV sets that are set to be available in the spring of this year. The products will be on display at CES later this week.
The deal builds on an existing partnership that the companies announced last summer, in which the streaming service was made available on Internet-connected LG Blu-ray Disc players.
In addition to the Internet-enabled HDTVs, LG has added five new broadband-enabled Blu-ray disc players that will be compatible with the Netflix service and will also beon display at CES.
The announcement adds one more option for Netflix subscribers to view its
streaming service in their living rooms. Last year, the company made the "Watch Instantly"
service available on Blu-ray players from Samsung, the stand-alone Roku Netflix Player, and on
Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT)'s Xbox 360.
