Mobile streaming firm Qik Inc. has confirmed that it raised $5.5 million in a new round of financing, but the company remains tight-lipped on what it plans to do with the cash.
Qik's most recent funding round was led by venture firms Quest Venture Partners and CampVentures, and includes some strategic individual investors. The $5.5 million round comes on top of a $4 million round that the company raised through angel investors such as Netscape founder Mark Andreessen and Salesforce.com founder Mark Benioff.
Bhaskar Roy, co-founder and vice president of product marketing for Qik, says the company's mobile streaming application works with Windows Mobile, Symbian, Android, and "some flavors of Java," but that the company is looking to make the technology even more universal.
"We're looking at how we can enable more people to be able to use Qik and taking this to the next level," Roy said. "We want to see how can we make this more of a mainstream product supporting more devices, and how we can make it so that everyone can use Qik."
However, how that will translate into the Qik's plans for expansion is still largely a mystery. Roy wouldn't comment on any plans to increase headcount at Qik, for instance, or even what the company's personnel count even is right now.
