By teaming up with content delivery network (CDN) Limelight Networks Inc. (Nasdaq: LLNW), online video platform provider Brightcove Inc. will offer broad support for Adobe Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: ADBE)'s Flash Media Server (FMS) 3.5, giving customers access to new quality and security features.

Among other things, the move will boost the quality of videos that Brightcove manages, by enabling customers to encode and deliver adaptive bit-rate versions of their videos. Using Adobe's adaptive bit-rate technology, the quality of customer video streams will seamlessly adjust to match an end user's available bandwidth.

Support for FMS 3.5 will also give Brightcove the ability to offer some new security options that could appeal to larger media companies, such as video stream encryption using Adobe's RTMPe protocol, which prevents consumers from "ripping" the streams they're watching. The new version of the media server also supports SWF verification to ensure that users aren't watching videos in an unauthorized player.

In addition, Brightcove customers will be able to take advantage of H.264 encoding, bandwidth optimization, DVR-like capabilities, and other new features of Adobe's FMS 3.5.

The news builds on a partnership announcement that Brightcove made with Adobe in April, in which the companies said they would work more closely to integrate Adobe's Flash technology with Brightcove's online video management and distribution platform.

With that announcement, Brightcove said it would support Adobe's open media player framework, which will enable customers to more easily build custom players and integrate with third-party tools for delivering, monitoring, and monetizing their video assets.

In April, Adobe also said it would integrate Creative Suite 4 suite and Adobe Media Encoder with the Brightcove 3 platform, so that customers of Adobe's video production software will be able to publish directly into the Brightcove system.
