Presidential Race Drives October Web Traffic

Politics drove Web traffic in October, with Websites from the presidential candidates, along with content tied to the election, posting huge increases.

According to comScore Inc. , Saturday Night Live sketches, including Tina Fey’s impersonation of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, made NBC one of the top 10 gaining properties of the month. Videos on NBC’s Saturday Night Live site helped it draw 4.4 million unique visitors in October, an increase of more than 85% compared to September.

Video site Hulu LLC , owned by NBC Universal and News Corp., drew 5.3 million unique visitors, up 87 percent from September, according to ComScore.

Politics was the fastest growing category in October, with political Websites posting 28 million visitors, up 40 percent from September.

ComScore says BarackObama.com was the most visited site in the category, with 8.5 million visitors, up 59 percent from September. JohnMcCain.com drew 3.8 million visitors, up 29 percent. Sites owned by Google were the most visited property in October, with Google sites racking up 147 million visitors. It was followed by Yahoo Inc. (Nasdaq: YHOO) sites (144.9 million visitors) and Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) sites (123.5 million visitors).
