Following a redesign of the AOL.com homepage in September, advertising click-through rates have increased 30 percent on its primary 300x250 ad banner, AOL’s Platform-A unit said Monday. AOL says the redesign, which has sparked a double-digit increase in click-through rates, is also driving increased usage on the site. Average daily visitors jumped 13 percent in November, and total minutes spent on AOL grew by 29 percent last month compared to the same time last year, AOL said, citing ComScore data.

The redesigned site also allows Web surfers to access multiple email accounts from AOL.com, including Gmail, Yahoo, and Hotmail, and users can also access top social networking sites from the front page. AOL says that allowing easier access to outside email and social networks contributed to the traffic increase.

Also in the news:

  • Consumers spent $19.44 billion on online shopping during the first 42 days of the November-December holiday season, which is about the same amount they spent during the same period last year, according to ComScore. Since Cyber Monday (Dec. 1), retailers have generated $8.26 billion in online sales revenue, up 3 percent compared to 2007. But ComScore says e-commerce sales declined last week by 1 percent. Apparel and accessories retailers have seen the most growth in online sales during the holiday season, jumping 21 percent compared to last year, followed by books and magazines (18 percent).

  • Original This Old House host Bob Vila is expanding into online videos, adding interactive content to BobVila.com. Vila is using a video search engine built by Cambridge, Mass.-based EveryZing, which allows users to search his how-tow videos.
