Imax Corp. shares dropped 4 percent yesterday on news that the delay of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will negatively affect the company's revenue.

Because of a scheduling conflict with Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Harry Potter won't appear on Imax screens until two weeks after its July 14 release (save for two theaters in New York and L.A.). This conflict comes as a result of Harry Potter's eight-month delay -- the film was originally scheduled for release in November.

Merriman Curhan Ford analyst Eric Wold said yesterday the delay "should negatively impact Imax boxoffice results," despite the Imax version's 12 minutes of 3-D footage.

"There will obviously be some consumers that choose to wait for the Imax version with its 3-D scenes or will choose to see it for a second time, but we [do] not believe this will be enough to offset the negative impact from the move," Wold said.

Be honest: Who could wait two weeks to see this?

  • Facebook 's U.S. unique visitors grew by 8 percent to 82.9 million in May, nearly doubling its rate of growth in April, according to Web analytics company Compete. However, Twitter Inc. 's growth was flat, with an audience that grew only 1 percent from the previous month. This is in stark contrast to its 40 percent growth between March and April.
  • In other social-networking news: Don't Tweet your vacation plans, the Associated Press says. Citing a couple who may or may not have been robbed as a result of their Tweets, the AP warns that posting about your travels on Twitter or Facebook could lead to being robbed. But can strangers really piece together where we live from clues online? Wired's Mathew Honan, who cyber-stalked a woman he saw in the park as "a little experiment," says yes.
