YouTube Inc. set a personal record on Sunday by streaming U2's "360" concert at the Rose Bowl to 10 million viewers live across the globe.

The two-and-a-half-hour concert is the most successful live event in YouTube's five-year history. Not to mention, video of the concert has racked up another million views in the past three days on YouTube.

"This was a big win for the YouTube community," Chris Maxcy, YouTube's head of music partnerships, told Variety.

The concert's 10 million streams on YouTube do fall short of the 13.9 million that Obama's inauguration attracted on CNN. However, as the Silicon Alley Insider points out, neither Bono nor Obama can possibly compete with the power of adorable puppies. Ustream's infamous Puppy Cam had already racked up 15 million streams by last December.

In other news:

  • The rumored Google Music Search surfaced yesterday, to lackluster reviews. Now, when users enter a music-related query into the search engine, the results will include audio previews from MySpace (iLike) or Lala, and show related links from Pandora, iMeem, and Rhapsody. Critics so far have said that Google still has some work to do, as some queried information, such as popular song lyrics, has failed to trigger correct responses.

  • Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) and Yahoo Inc. (Nasdaq: YHOO) have delayed signing their search deal, which they originally said in July they would do by October 27. In an SEC filing, Yahoo wrote:

Given the complex nature of the transaction, there remain some details to be finalized. The parties are working diligently on finalizing the agreements, have made good progress to date, and have agreed to execute the agreements as expeditiously as possible.

But don't panic, BoomTown's Kara Swisher writes. The deal will get done.

This is great for the industry and it shows the power of online video.  However, it would be great to get some clarity around 10M number.  Does it represent 10M connections or 10M unique viewers?  Also it would be helpful to get a peak number of concurrent viewers.  Unfortunately even if we would bundle all CDNs today, serving 10M concurrent viewers at 500Kbps would be a challenge.
