Releasing albums online has become commonplace, it seems. Old standbys Paul McCartney and Guns 'n' Roses both put out their latest and eagerly anticipated albums on the Internet today.

Reuters reports the albums "dropping," in the parlance of our times, on MySpace Music.

Well, not quite. Songs on the albums are online and available for streaming, but in the case of Guns 'n' Roses, they were online months ago, and they're also legally streamable at imeem Inc. The album goes on sale for $11.99 at Best Buy on November 23.

And Paul McCartney's album (made with Youth, alias The Firemen) was actually online Tuesday, Wired points out. NPR.org, that musical trailblazer, was first in posting the 13-song album on its Website.

In other news:

  • Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) is implementing the hard-times rent-to-own strategy with its Zune music service, according to Seattle Tech Report. The Zune Pass, which is an unlimited music subscription service to keep for as long as you are a subscriber for $14.99 a month, now includes 10 songs to keep forever. Or you could just listen for free (legally) whenever you want without the hassle of storing (and now backing up) music files. Hmm...

  • Facebook is being sued for patent infringement. Leader Technologies, an Ohio company whose motto is "The Intellectual Capital Company," claims it has patented a "system for the management and storage of electronic information," according to a press release (!!!) the company sent out yesterday.

Here is a news bit you missed....

IRVINE, Calif. - November 20, 2008 - Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. today announced that World of Warcraft®’s second expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, has sold more than 2.8 million copies in its first 24 hours of availability*, making it the fastest-selling PC game of all time. This eclipses the previous record of nearly 2.4 million copies sold in 24 hours, set in January 2007 by Blizzard’s first World of Warcraft expansion, The Burning Crusade®. Wrath of the Lich King was simultaneously released in North America, Europe, Chile, Argentina, and Russia on November 13; Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand on November 14; and South Korea and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau on November 18.

2.8 Million copies is $110M or so.

Gaming certainly appears to be the place to be. Looks like the best place to hide from recession depression.
